OFFICIAL WORD FROM THE TIGERS: TIGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH JOHNNY DAMON

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms with outfielder Johnny Damon on a one-year contract.

Damon batted .282 (155x550) with 107 runs scored, 36 doubles, three triples, 24 home runs, 82 RBI and 12 stolen bases in 143 games with the New York Yankees last season. In 15 games during the playoffs with the Yankees, he hit .281 (18x64) with 10 runs scored, three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI.

“We are excited to add a quality player like Johnny Damon to our club,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “Johnny is a proven winner and he brings a lefthanded bat that will help strengthen us from an offensive perspective.”

Damon has hit .288 (2425x8408) with 1,483 runs scored, 451 doubles, 95 triples, 207 home runs, 996 RBI and 374 stolen bases in 2,131 games during his 15-year major league career with the Kansas City Royals (1995-2000), Oakland Athletics (2001), Boston Red Sox (2002-05) and Yankees (2006-09).

A two-time all-star selection (2002, 2005), Damon is tops among all active major league players with 374 stolen bases, while he is third with 1,483 runs scored and fourth with 2,425 hits and 451 doubles. Since the start of the 1998 season, he is tops among all American League players with 406 doubles, while he is second with 2,102 hits and 77 triples and third with 1,320 runs scored.
