TIGERS ROSTER CHANGES - AUG 18
The Tigers today announced that the club has optioned the contract of righthanded pitcher Eddie Bonine to Triple A Toledo. Aubrey Huff, acquired yesterday from Baltimore, will take Bonine's spot on the 25-man roster.
TIGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH DRAFT SELECTIONS
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a four-year contract (with club options for 2014 and 2015) with righthanded pitcher Jacob Turner, the team’s first-round selection (ninth overall pick) in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft from Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis, MO. Additionally, the club has agreed to terms with lefthanded pitcher Andy Oliver, the team’s second-round selection from Oklahoma State University and shortstop Daniel Fields, the team’s sixth-round selection from University of Detroit Jesuit High School.
Turner compiled a 7-2 record and 0.60 ERA as a senior at Westminster Christian Academy in 2009. He fanned 113 batters in 58.1 innings pitched, while issuing only 13 walks. Turner was selected as a High School All-American by Baseball America following the season. The 6-5, 210-pound righthander was rated by Baseball America as the fifth-best prospect in the draft, while he was rated as possessing the second-best fastball among all draft-eligible high school prospects this year. Turner was selected the Gatorade Player of the Year in Missouri in 2009, while he pitched for Team USA during the summer of 2008.
Oliver compiled an 18-9 record, 4.02 ERA (230.2IP/103ER) and 235 strikeouts in 45 appearances (41 games started) over his three-year career at Oklahoma State University. He earned All-Big-12 Conference honors as a sophomore in 2008 after posting a 7-2 record, 2.20 ERA (98.1IP/24ER) and 96 strikeouts in 15 games (14 games started). Oliver was rated as the 21st-best prospect in this year’s draft by Baseball America. A 6-3, 210-pound lefthanded pitcher, Oliver saw action with Team USA during the summer of 2008. He finished 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA, as he fanned 24 batters in 19.1 innings pitched. Oliver was tabbed the 10th-best prospect in the Cape Cod League by Baseball America in the summer of 2007 after compiling a 1-1 record, 1.41 ERA and 54 strikeouts for Wareham.
Fields was tabbed a Second-Team High School All-American by Baseball America after hitting .596 (34x57) with 50 runs scored, five doubles, a triple, 13 home runs, 43 RBI and 30 stolen bases for the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. He was selected the 2009 MHSAA Mr. Baseball for the state of Michigan. Fields is the son of former Tigers outfielder and coach Bruce Fields.
Additionally, the Tigers agreed to terms with first baseman/lefthanded pitcher James Robbins. Robbins was the club’s 30th-round selection from Shorecrest High School in Washington.
After agreeing to terms with these four players, the Tigers signed 25 players from this year’s draft.
In a related move, the Tigers today designated the contract of righthanded pitcher Chris Lambert for assignment to create a spot on the club’s 40-man roster for Turner.

TIGERS ACQUIRE AUBREY HUFF FROM BALTIMORE ORIOLES
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has acquired infielder/outfielder Aubrey Huff from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for righthanded pitcher Brett Jacobson.
Huff hit .253 (109x430) with 24 doubles, a triple, 13 home runs and 72 RBI in 110 games with the Orioles this season. He has batted .324 (34x105) with runners in scoring position this season.
“Huff is a quality major league hitter, who adds a lefthanded bat to our lineup and brings versatility to our club with his ability to play numerous positions,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said.
In 10 seasons at the major league level with Tampa Bay (2000-06), Houston (2006) and Baltimore (2007-09), Huff has compiled a .284 batting average (1371x4830), 288 doubles, 201 home runs and 739 RBI in 1,282 games.
Jacobson appeared in 35 games with Single A Lakeland this season, posting a 1-3 record, 3.74 ERA (55.1IP/23ER), six saves and 44 strikeouts. Jacobson’s contract will be assigned to Single A Frederick in the Carolina League.
In a related roster move, the Tigers today transferred righthanded pitcher Joel Zumaya from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Come On Guy...Let 'Em Pitch!

Take your hats off folks to Jim Leyland; it’s time he gets a good "nice going".
Now I know that we are a long way from winning anything, but somehow this is looking like a team meant to win this poor division.
Yup, I know what you are saying, the worst division in baseball with the KC guys and the Toronto Jays, but they still have to play the games. And they are in this division.
Our pitching is very good, I don’t like the way they are handling Porcello exactly, Gallaraga is in trouble, they may have destroyed Bonderman (who stole $40 million dollars) when he was very young and now he is literally almost out of the game, but they are making up for it by getting Porcello out of the game before he does something silly or does something to hurt himself.
Folks, the real issue as far as I’m concerned is taking a kid out at the 100 pitch mark all the time.
You never learn how to pitch! You never learn what you really have, cause folks the game really starts in the 6th and 7th inning...you know that, and I do too.
One day Porcello will poop all over himself when he is allowed to keep going to the 6th or 7th inning, and maybe who knows one day before he retires, 8 innings. Would that not be incredible?
One last thought, I hear the color announcer now calling Justin Verlander the best in the game, (he calls lots of guys the best of this and that) well to get that title you have to do a lot of pitching AND winning, and not have these games whereby you give up four or five runs all the time and then strike out 10.
I saw many guys pitch when they were down, lots of runs, and all of a sudden find their stuff. I don’t think that is the case with Justin, but these 4 and 5 run innings that he is giving is telling us to be very cautious before anyone anoints him the “Best” of something!
I was there, I never saw a pitcher with better stuff in my life than Mickey Lolich; each and every time that he went out!
No one has “Lolich Stuff” on this staff, I promise you that for sure.
I was always somewhat shocked when anyone scored on him!
Mickey and I may not have been the best of pals (never were for some reason as only he would know) but folks when you see a great pitcher you know it. Can you imagine the Tiger pitchers in the sixties allowing the manager to remove them with a lead? Shucks, down right ridiculous! Even Jim Leyland would admit that in a NY second.
Maybe we had different ERA’s, but there is no reason why these guys should not be allowed to play more so they can find out if they can pitch. See, that’s the difference, learning how to pitch. I am afraid that these guys today (with little desire or choice) want to pitch a complete game.

Detroit Tigers Make Moves After Lose To Baltimore.
Following tonight's 8-2 lose to Baltimore, the Tigers optioned the contracts of catcher Dusty Ryan and outfielder Wilkin Ramirez to Triple A Toledo.
On Wednesday, the club will recall the contract of righthanded pitcher Chris Lambert from Triple A Toledo and purchase the contract of catcher Alex Avila from Double A Erie.
Both Lambert and Avila will be in uniform for Wednesday's game against the Orioles. Lambert will be number 40 and Avila will be number 13.
