TIGERS EXTEND JIM LEYLAND’S CONTRACT THROUGH 2013
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has extended the contract of Jim Leyland through the 2013 season.
The 2013 season will mark Leyland’s 22nd season as a manager at the major league level, his eighth as the manager of the Tigers. He has compiled a 1,676-1,659 record during his managerial career. Leyland’s 1,676 wins are tops among all active major league managers and 15th-most all-time in major league history.
“Jim is as fine a manager as there is in baseball, he has done a fantastic job for the organization and we are thrilled to have him back managing the Tigers in 2013,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Jim and his ability to lead our club on the field. I am confident that you will not find a harder working or better prepared manager in the game.”
Leyland, 67, has guided the Tigers to a 607-528 record during his seven seasons as the club’s manager. He is one of only three managers in Tigers history to register at least 600 victories with the club. Sparky Anderson (1,331 wins) and Hughie Jennings (1,131 wins) are the two other managers in Tigers history with at least 600 wins with the club.
“Detroit is a tremendous baseball town and I couldn’t dream of a better place to manage,” Leyland said. “The support of Mr. Ilitch and Dave is second to none and gives this club an opportunity to win every year. Tigers fans and the people of Michigan have supported us so well during my time here, I can’t even begin to express how much that means to me.”
The Tigers have advanced to the post-season three times during Leyland’s managerial career with the club, including winning the American League Central Division in each of the last two seasons. Leyland joins Jennings as the only two managers in Tigers history to lead the club to post-season play in three seasons.
Detroit advanced to the World Series this season for the second time during Leyland’s managerial tenure. He is the third manager in franchise history to guide a Tigers club to the World Series multiple times, joining Jennings and Mickey Cochrane. Jennings led Detroit to three straight World Series (1907-09), while Cochrane led the Tigers to the World Series in back-to-back seasons (1934-35).
Additionally, the Tigers have invited all six members of Leyland’s coaching staff to return for the 2013 season. Toby Harrah has also been invited back to serve as the club’s assistant hitting coach, a role he performed over the last half of the 2012 season.

Miguel Cabrera Named MLB Player of the Year! CONGRATS CABBY!
October 26 – Miguel Cabrera, third baseman for the Detroit Tigers, has been named the Player of the Year within SN’s 2012 MLB Awards, presented by Gillette Odor Shield.
Cabrera finished the season with a .330 batting average, 44 homers and 139 RBIs, resulting in the majors’ first Triple Crown since 1967. His .606 slugging percentage and .999 OPS also led the majors. In addition, he scored 109 runs, clubbed 40 doubles and posted a .393 on-base percentage for the AL Central champions and AL pennant winners.
“He’s a great hitter having a great year. He played his best when we needed him to, down the stretch,” teammate Justin Verlander said.
He’s the best hitter I’ve ever seen other than (Ted) Williams. He’s just amazing. Watch him day in and day out, he very seldom takes a bad swing. To be able to use the whole field the way he does with power, my goodness,” Tigers great Al Kaline said.
Sporting News’ Player of the Year award was decided on by both American & National League MLB players.

DETROIT – The American League Central Division Champion Detroit Tigers will host Game Four of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees today at Comerica Park. All gates will open at 2:00 p.m. First pitch will be at 4:07 p.m.

· Detroit Tigers Rally Towels will be distributed to the first 20,000 fans to enter Comerica Park, courtesy of 97.1 FM The Ticket.
· Former Tigers All-Star catcher, Ivan Rodriguez, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Thursday’s game.
· The national anthem will be performed by legendary Motown vocal group, The Four Tops. The US Marine Corps Honor Guard will present colors.
· Game Ball Delivery: First Lieutenant Jason Everts of the Michigan Army National Guard from Rochester, Michigan will deliver the game ball. First Lieutenant Everts recently returned from a combat tour in Afghanistan and has also served in Kosovo and Iraq. He has received a Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. First Lieutenant Everts has proudly served the United States Army National Guard for 14 years.

DETROIT – Based on the forecast for inclement weather for the remainder of the evening, Game Four of the 2012 American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park has been postponed in an effort to preserve the integrity of an uninterrupted full nine-inning game. Game Four of the ALCS has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 4:07 p.m.
Tickets for tonight’s game marked ALCS Home Game #2 are now valid for the game to be played on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 4:07 p.m. Tickets marked ALCS Home Game #3 are now valid for Friday, October 19, 2012 at a time to be determined (if necessary).

TIGERS TO HOST GAME ONE OF THE AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES AGAINST OAKLAND ATHLETICS ON SATURDAY AT COMERICA PARK
Saturday, October 6 – Oakland Athletics (Probables: Justin Verlander vs. TBA) @ 6:10 p.m. (Gates open at 4:00 p.m.)
All fans will receive a Detroit Tigers Rally Towel, courtesy of Chevy.
Both teams will participate in pregame introductions on the field. Ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m.
Former Tigers pitcher and 1968 World Series Champion, Mickey Lolich, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before tomorrow night’s game.
The national anthem will be performed by Michigan native and The Voice runner-up Tony Lucca. The Michigan Joint Honor Guard will present colors. A 60’x120’ American Flag will be presented on the outfield grass during the singing of the national anthem. A Military flyover featuring four A-10 Aircrafts from the 107th Fighter 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard is scheduled to take place prior to the game.
Game Ball Delivery: Sergeant Christopher Berry of the United States Marine Corps from Davison, Michigan will deliver the game ball. Sergeant Berry recently returned from his third deployment including two tours in Afghanistan and one tour in Iraq. In 2010, his unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their actions in Hellmand Province, Afghanistan. He is currently serving at the Recruiting Station Detroit. Sergeant Berry has proudly served the Marine Corps for eight years.
