By Matt Harding

Al Kaline was at a Rochester Hills Meijer today signing his new book, Six: A Salute to Al Kaline. In Play! Magazine got the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Kaline and talk about the book, what Kaline does to keep himself busy, and Ernie Harwell, amongst other things.

One question In Play! asked Kaline: "Do you have a favorite piece of baseball memorabilia?" He said that he has a collection of baseballs signed by different presidents.

More to come on the event in the upcoming issue of In Play! Magazine.

Boesch does it again!

By Jusitn Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

With the Tigers having their seven game winning streak snapped Saturday night losing 5-6 things looked different this afternoon as the Tigers finished off the D-Backs 3-1.

The Tigers were down 1-0 in the first with Chris Youngs double to score Justin Upton form third after getting on base with a walk. The score would remain 1-0 until the seventh when Cabrera starting the inning off with a single to Upton in right field.

Rookie Brennan Boesch took one deep for his 10th home run on the year and nobody out and giving the Tigers the lead. Next up Carlos Guillen drilled his 5th home run on the season in the same spot as Boesch and Kennedy having retired 13 straight going into the inning made two grand mistakes.

The past two weeks the Tigers have been playing good baseball winning games from behind and some where their offense seemed unstoppable. The Tigers have scored 52 runs in the past nine games and the rotation and bull pen have definitely helped one another out to keep a balanced attack.

They-re still 1.5 GB from division leader Minnesota Twins but there's still plenty of season left and if they keep playing baseball like this they can find themselves with opportunity to trade spots.

Tigers on a roll

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

With two series sweeps and a balanced attack against the MLB's weaker teams in the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates the Tigers have gained momentum.

Galarraga had a solid 4 inning's but early in the fifth gave up a double to Kelly Johnson with one out, then Stephen Drew, and Jason Upton reached with singles scoring Kelly Johnson. The Tigers made a pitcher change after a fallout by Galarraga with just one out.

With the game tied at the bottom of the fourth the Tigers looked to get back on track in order to secure their seventh straight win.

With big hitting from Magglio Ordonez hitting a home run, and Brandon Inge having a double, triple and single the Tigers secured the win. A solid performance from the bullpen the Tigers
took command in the bottom of the eighth and Jose Valverde closed it out getting a line out for Upton, and a strike out by Miguel Montero. Valverde with the save the Tigers look to have continuous success in the three game series.

Dontrelle Willis returns to CoPa

By Matt Harding
In Play on Facebook

Dontrelle's return to Comerica Park didn't start off as planned. D-Train returned as a member of the National League's Arizona Diamondbacks. Willis' first batter, Ryan Raburn, drew a walk. Two batters later, Magglio Ordonez cranked a 2-run home run to deep left-center field. The ball hit off of the base of Comerica's flag pole. However, Willis finished the inning off by striking out two batters.

The second inning of D-Train's return wasn't a whole lot better than the first. Brandon Inge led off the inning with a double. Catcher Alex Avila walked on seven pitches. Then, Danny Worth drove in a run with a double. The damage still wasn't done; Raburn got an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field. Willis struck out Johnny Damon and Ordonez grounded out to end the inning with the score 4-0 Tigers.

After two shaky innings, Dontrelle showed up in the third inning, seeing only three batters and sitting them down in grand fashion. Willis got Miguel Cabrera to ground out to first base with an ugly swing. He then got Brennan Boesch to strike out swinging. Carlos Guillen finished off the inning with a lazy ground ball out to the shortstop Stephen Drew.

Willis continued to pitch well starting the fourth inning off by getting a ground out and then a fly out. He had retired eight batters in a row until he walked Worth. Still, he finished off the inning by getting another ground out.

After a rousing top half of the fifth inning, where the Diamondbacks scored four runs, tying the game, Willis gave up a run on a sac fly RBI by Don Kelly. Kelly replaced Cabrera who left the game with dizziness. Willis ended the inning soon after by getting a ground ball out followed by a fly out to right field.

Willis exited the game after five innings. He struck out four and walked four. All five runs Willis gave up were earned. The game was 5-4 when he left. The D-Backs, however, scored a run in the top half of the sixth inning, making the score knotted up at five. Dontrelle will get a no decision in his return to Comerica Park.

The Tigers will continue their series against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Another former Tiger, Edwin Jackson, will face off against Rick Porcello.

Boesch makes presence known

The Tigers were not phased when the Washington Nationals went ahead 2-0 in the top of the second inning.

They turned on the jets in the bottom half driving in four runs and the team didn't stop there. Justin Verlander's 11 strikeout performance really gave his team a chance to hit freely but yet still aggressively.

Left Fielder Brennan Boesch really took charge going in the seventh putting any chance the Nationals had for a come back to rest.

He drove in three runs on top of the one he already. He drove one deep for a 3 run shot giving his a team a great start to the series against the Nationals.

Brennan Boesch a star in the making

By Matt Harding
In Play on Facebook

Sure, it's too early to be definite, but after Wednesday night's game against the Washington Nationals, Detroit left fielder Brennan Boesch continues to show that he belongs.

It was an average night for Boesch, who has been beyond spectacular this season. In four at-bats, Boesch got three hits, scored two runs, and drove in four. His batting average on the season is now at .344. Three of those RBI came on a 3-run dinger.

Boesch has been an absolute wrecking ball against opponents this season since being called up to the big league team.

While we'll have to wait until the end of the season to find out for sure, the left-handed slugger has shown signs of stardom early in his career.

Recap: Detroit Tigers vs. Washington Nationals

By Matt Harding
In Play on Facebook

Detroit came into the Tuesday evening contest 33-29, just 2.5 games behind the Minnesota Twins. Their opponents, the Washington Nationals, were 31-33, six games behind the Atlanta Braves. However, the Nats are stuck in a tough National League East, where, with their almost .500 winning percentage, they were in last place.

Starting for the Tigers was pitcher Max Scherzer, who began the game by striking out Christian Guzman. Nyjer Morgan, the second batter for the Nationals, laid a perfect bunt down the third base line. Morgan reached first base without a throw. Then, before Scherzer could bat an eye, Morgan stole second. The speedster then reached third base on a wild throw by catcher Gerald Laird. Morgan later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Zimmerman, making the score 1-0. Slugger Adam Dunn finished off the inning by striking out looking on a 3-2 fastball.

Starting for the Nationals was lefty John Lannan, who started off the bottom of the first with a strikeout. Ryan Raburn, who is standing in for an injured Austin Jackson, (who is listed as day-to-day) was the victim and went down looking.

In the top of the second, with Roger Bernadina on first and Josh Willingham on third, Scherzer got first baseman Mike Morse to strike out swinging. Shortstop Ian Desmond flew out to left field on a slider to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, Brandon Inge extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The next batter, Laird, smoked the pitch right back to the pitcher; the ball deflected to a spot between the first and second basemen where there would be no throw.

With the bases loaded and nobody out for the Tigers, Danny Worth grounded out to the shortstop who threw home, forcing out Carlos Guillen. The bases remained loaded and up walked Ryan Raburn, who on a 3-2 count, got the base on balls, tying up the game at one. The inning ended after another force out at the plate, initiated by a Johnny Damon ground ball, and a fly ball by Magglio Ordonez.

To lead off the third inning, Scherzer once again struck out Guzman. Morgan then singled up the middle and stole second base while Zimmerman struck out. Dunn was walked on four straight balls. Laird, on the 0-2 pitch to Willingham, called for a high fastball. However, Scherzer let it catch too much of the plate and Willingham took the ball to right-center field, scoring a run. Former Tiger Ivan Rodriguez then came up and grounded the ball through the infield, scoring another run. With the score 3-1, Tiger's pitching coach Rick Knapp came to the mound to settle down Scherzer. Stepping to the plate with two outs was Bernadina, who struck out looking. Scherzer's strikeout total after the third inning was six. For those of you bad at math, that's an average of two an inning.

In the bottom half of the third, Miguel Cabrera scored on a slow ground ball hit by Guillen. The ball was thrown home by Morse to an unprepared 'Pudge' Rodriguez.

Leading off the top of the fourth inning Morse made up for his previous inning mistake, hitting a solo home run to right field.

With the score 4-2 and a runner on second base, Ordonez rocketed a ball off of the left field wall, scoring Raburn. With an empty first base, the Nationals elected to walk Cabrera. Rookie Brennan Boesch, with one away and a full count, walked to load the bases. Guillen got the sac fly, tying the game at four in this tight contest.

Fast forwarding to the bottom of the fifth inning, with two men on, Raburn smashed a three-run dinger (his first of the year) to straightaway left field. The Tigers led the game 7-4. After facing one more batter, Lannan exited the game. He gave way to reliever Tyler Walker, who immediately gave up a double to Ordonez. No damage was done after the hit by Maggs.

After a rather uneventful sixth inning, in the top of the seventh, Phil Coke replaced Scherzer, who went six solid innings. Coke then pitched well, giving up no hits during that half inning.

Heading to the top of the eight, set-up man Joel Zumaya entered the game with one out for the Tigers. He pitched just as well as Coke, putting down both of the batters he faced, including former battery mate Ivan Rodriguez, who tonight made his first appearance at Comerica Park in a National's uniform.

At the start of the bottom of the eighth, lefty Sean Burnett relieved Walker. Burnett gave Ordonez his fourth hit of the evening, then struck out Cabrera and Boesch. With two outs, Guillen flew out to center field, ending the inning.

Closer Jose Valverde came into the game with a 0.66 ERA and started the inning off by hitting Bernadina with a first pitch fastball. The eccentric righty then struck out Morse, who went down check-swinging. Desmond then went down swinging; he was number 13 on the night for Tiger's pitching. After walking Guzman, Nyjer Morgan walked up to the plate at 2 for 4 on the night. Morgan was retired on a ground ball to the second baseman Guillen.

The Tigers beat the Nats with a score of 7-4.

Verlander needs to carry Tiger's staff if they want to see October

By Matt Harding
In Play on Facebook

After a slow start to commence the season, Justin Verlander is starting to show shades of the JV we all came to adore back in 2006, his first full year in the majors.

This year's 1-2 start in the month of April came as a shock to many fans as they were accustomed to seeing the right-handed flamethrower pitching well, especially coming off of a 19-9 season. His 2009 ERA, in fact, had been the lowest of his career at 3.45.

Verlander's strikeout ratio is at his career average here in the 2010 season, which is about eight K's per nine innings.

The Tiger's desperately need Verlander to perform at his best. If he doesn't, and has a performance like the one he did in 2008, the ballclub doesn't stand a chance against their AL Central counterparts.

His current record of 7-4, accompanied by an ERA of 3.56 may aid the team into the direction of October baseball. Still, Verlander absolutely has to perform at his best for the team to have a shot at a World Series ring.

If Verlander continues pitching well, could the Tigers return to the World Series?

Guillen takes one deep

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

With Jim Leyland Saturday night that Carlos Guillen is their second baseman and will play nine innings his decision proves to be more accurate.

The 35 year-old veteran is still a great hitter and defender but many thought he would slow down the double play. Since returning from the hamstring injury Guillen has had a hand in 11 double plays in 13 games.

So the speed issue can be put to rest so can his ability to still hit consistently, and not just because of his walk-off home run. He's batting .272 which isn't outstanding but he's got three home runs and a nine rbi's. And with the way the top half of the lineup is batting Guillen will have time to get comfortable in his permanent home on the field and in the line-up.

Cabrera threat to win Triple Crown

By Matt Harding
In Play on Facebook

If you haven't been keeping up to date with the Detroit Tigers this season, you still may have heard about the absolute tear first baseman Miguel Cabrera has been on. With a .339 batting average, 18 home runs, and 53 RBI, Cabrera is undoubtedly a favorite to win the AL MVP.

However, can Cabrera manage to do something that hasn't been done since 1967 when Carl Yastrzemski did it? Can Miguel Cabrera actually win the Triple Crown?

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Triple Crown refers to a batter, in this case, who at season's end leads the league in home runs, runs batted in, and batting average. In the history of the National League, only five different players have done it. Rogers Hornsby won the Triple Crown twice (1922, 1925). In American League history, eight different players have achieved this daunting task. Ted Williams accomplished the feat twice, just as Hornsby did (1942, 1947). In 1887, Tip O'Neill hit well enough to become the only player in the American Association (which existed from 1882-1891) to ever win a Triple Crown.

To answer my own question, I believe there is a slight chance that Cabrera can be good enough to sweep these stats to win the Crown. His one downfall may be his batting average. Although it's a staggering .339, Robinson Cano (.376), Justin Morneau (.362), and Ichiro Suzuki (.346) all have better averages and could continue at the phenomenal paces they are currently at. Still, it will be possible for Miggy to manage to keep his batting average at a level of competitiveness which could give him the opportunity to win the title.

If Cabrera manages to win the Triple Crown, he'll be only the third first baseman to ever do so. Jimmie Foxx (1933) and Lou Gehrig (1934) were the only two to win the Triple Crown.

"So let's root, root, root for Cab-re-ra. If he doesn't get crowned it's a shame! For it's one -- two -- three categories to go for the Tri-ple Crown!"

Even if Cabby doesn't accomplish this, it will most definitely be a season to remember.

Another Perfect Game?

Armando Galarraga takes the mound against the Chicago White Sox after being robbed of what was clearly a perfect game.

Can we expect the same performance?

There's no way of predicting a pitcher performing as well as Galarraga did last week pitching what we all know was a perfect game. Anything can happen to any pro on any given day.

In hopes he throws half as well as he did last week the Tigers should have a good chance of wining the opening game having four players hit over .300%.

So as Galarrga pulls up to Comerica Park in his new Corvette the Tigers hope he puts on the same show and get them closer to taking firs place under our belt.

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers this evening selected third baseman Nick Castellanos from Archbishop McCarthy High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and righthanded pitcher Chance Ruffin from the University of Texas with the 44th and 48th overall selections, respectively, in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Castellanos, a 6-4, 210-pound third baseman, was rated by Baseball America as the 14th overall prospect prior to the draft. He was also rated by Baseball America as possessing the second-best strike-zone judgment and as the third-best pure hitter among high school players.

The third baseman was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Florida after batting .542 with 34 runs scored, 41 RBI and 22 stolen bases while leading his team to the Class 4A state championship. He earned Most Valuable Player honors in the 2009 Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field after finishing the game with three runs scored, four doubles and three RBI. He earned all tournament honors with the USA Baseball 18U National Team that won the gold medal at the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships.

Ruffin, a 6-1, 185-pound righthanded pitcher, posted a 6-1 record, 0.75 ERA and 14 saves in 35 appearances during his junior season at the University of Texas. He fanned 94 batters in 60.1 innings pitched during his junior season and fanned 290 batters in 262.1 innings pitched during his career with the Longhorns. He is the son of former major leaguer Bruce Ruffin.

Ruffin was named a Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American in 2010 and is currently leading the nation with a 0.75 ERA and 14.1 strikeouts per nine innings, while he is tied for third with 14 saves. Ruffin is a finalist for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award while also earning All-Big 12 honors for the third consecutive season.

The 2010 First-Year Player Draft continues tomorrow at noon and will continue through the 30th round before concluding with the final 20 rounds on Wednesday.

Galarraga's in style

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

Armando Galarraga's perfect game as the rest of the world will call it showed he's more than a great pitcher. He showed class, and sportsmanship after the play and the next day when handing Jim Joyce the Tigers lineup.

As hard as that would be for anyone to do he did it with respect for the game, his fans, and his team. Chevrolet didn't let that go unnoticed. They awarded Galarraga 2010 Chevrolet Corvette for his professionalism.

Max Sherzer hopes to put together another great start tonight and give the Tigers a good start to another divisional series against the Kansas City Royals. The Royals still hitting well as a club batting second in AL average have had rough starts from key pitchers.

Providing Scherzer doesn't have another roller coaster outing going from good starts to bad ones he should be able to give his team who's batting 6th in the AL some cushion in tonight's game.

1890 Submariner Tim Keefe of the New York Giants franchise of the Players League defeats the Boston Reds, 9-4, to record his 300th win. 'Sir Timothy', who won 19 straight decisions in 1888, will finish his 14-year career with 342 victories.

1937 Gus Suhr establishes a new National League record when he plays in his 822th consecutive game. The Pirates first baseman's streak will end the following day when he attends his mother funeral in San Francisco.

1964 At Connie Mack Stadium, Sandy Koufax throws his third no-hitter in three years, blanking the Phillies 3-0. The Dodgers' southpaw, who will add a perfect game to his resume next season, joins Bob Feller as the only other modern major leaguer to pitch three career hitless games.

1968 Don Drysdale pitches his sixth consecutive shutout defeating the Pirates, 5-0. The Dodger right -hander will extend his major league record scoreless streak to 58 2/3 innings before yielding a run in his next start.

1968 En route to a 2-0 win at Wrigley Field, Mets' rookie southpaw Jerry Koosman strikes out seven consecutive batters.

1974 On ten-cent beer night, the Indians forfeit to the Rangers due the Tribe's unruly fans as the game is called off in the bottom of the ninth with scored tied at five by home plate ump, Nestor Chylak. An estimated 60,000 cups of brew is sold to a crowd of 25,134.

1976 In an 11-0 victory at Dodger Stadium, Mets right fielder Dave Kingman hits three home runs. Sky King’s two-run dinger and two three-run round trippers drives in eight runs, a new club record.

1986 In a 12-3 rout of the Braves, Pirates rookie outfielder Barry Bonds hits his first major league home run off Craig McMurtry. Bobby’s son will become the All-time career home run leader hitting 762 during his 22-year career playing for Pittsburgh and the San Francisco Giants.

1990 Dodger hurler Ramon Martinez fans eighteen batters as he three-hits the Braves, 6-0.

2003 Although his bat may have contained cork in yesterday's game, all five of Sammy Sosa's historic bats housed at the Hall of Fame and the76 of confiscated from his locker by major league baseball revealed no signs of tampering. X-rays and CT scans were used to clear cleared Cubs' slugger remaining lumber.

2004 Both Barry Bonds (675) and Rafael Palmeiro (536 and 537, to pass Mickey Mantle) both homer marking only the third time in baseball history that two players with more than 500 home runs go deep in the same game. Willie Mays and Ernie Banks (1970) and Mays again with Hank Aaron were the first pairs to accomplish the feat (1971).

2009 In the opener of a twin bill, Randy Johnson gives a solid six-inning performance in the Giants’ 5-1 victory over the Nationals to earn his 300 career victory. The 'Big Unit' becomes the 24th pitcher to accomplish the feat, and first to reach the milestone on his first attempt since Tom Seaver beat the Yankees in 1985.
