Max Scherzer

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

Although the Tigers drove in 10 runs and recorded 15 hits Max Scherzer's dominance on the mound caught the eye of most viewers.

Scherzer posted 14 strikeouts and in just 5 2/3 innings and shutting out the Oakland A's. He commanded the game before handing it off to the bullpen, and they kept things rolling only allowing two runs the rest of the way.

Not to take anything away from Scherzer's big win, but if he were to play this way on a more consistent basis he would be in the rotation all year long. He has allowed 8 or more hits and three of those five were losses the other two a no decision.

Showcasing major league fastballs and change-ups like he did tonight could really give a nudge to the decision as to how often or long will he play in the Major Leagues. Games like tonight help his confidence and if he can roll that motivation into his next possible start he can build on his stats and help his team to try and move up into 1st place.

TIGERS VS OAKLAND PRE-GAME REPORT MAY 28

In Play on Facebook

Dontrelle Willis on the mound

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

Dontrelle Willis has nearly the same amount of walks (25) as Justin Verlander (23). But the biggest factor is Willis has pitched almost half the innings as Verlander.

Willis has been very unproductive since putting on a Tigers uniform and still we sit and wait for him to pitch like he did in Florida. Will we ever see that from him again?

There's a possibility we won't.

with a 1-2 record in eight games this season he's pitched 38 innings, allowed 21 runs, 25 base-on-balls, and only 28 strikeouts. Theses numbers are nearly neck-and-neck with Verlander who's pitched 65 innings.

Starting against the Oakland A's tonight we will see if Willis can gain control of his pitches early and stay consistent for at least 5 innings. The Tigers bullpen has been one of the best, but everyone needs to play their role and let's hope Willis can do just that.

GUILLEN REINSTATED FROM 15-DAY DL, WORTH OPTIONED TO TOLEDO

The Tigers today recalled Carlos Guillen from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Triple A Toledo and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list. To create room on the club’s 25-man roster, the Tigers today optioned the contract of infielder Danny Worth to Toledo.

Guillen saw action in five games with Toledo during an injury rehabilitation assignment, hitting .333 (6x18) with five runs scored, three doubles, a home run, two RBI and two walks.

Guillen had been sidelined since April 23 with a left hamstring strain.

1946 The first night game is played at Yankee Stadium. The Senators beat the Bronx Bombers in the Tuesday evening tilt, 2-1.

1956 Pirates first baseman Dale Long hits his eighth home run in eight games. This major league record will be later tied by Yankee first baseman Don Mattingly (1987) and Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr (1993).

1968 The American League votes to divide itself into two divisions and reduce its schedule to 156 games. The Junior Circuit will reconsider and will continue to play a schedule of 162 contests.

1976 Ron LeFlore's 30-game hitting streak comes to end as Detroit loses to the Yankees, 9-5. Ed Figueroa and Tippy Martinez hold the Tiger outfielder hitless in four at-bats.

1996 In the Orioles' 12-8 win over Seattle at the Kingdome, Cal Ripken blasts three home runs. The Baltimore's shortstop's grand slam and two two-run homers adds up to a career-high eight RBIs.

2000 The Diamondbacks team-record 11-game home winning streak is halted by the Brewers. Marquis Grissom's RBI single in the 11th inning is the difference in the 4-3 loss to Milwaukee.

2000 The Angels, for the first time in franchise history, hit four home runs in one inning. In the fifth frame of the Halo's 11-4 victory, Darin Erstad, Mo Vaughn, Tim Salmon and Garret Anderson all go yard.

2001 In an 11-inning slugfest with Colorado, LA catcher Paul Lo Duca goes 6-for-6 in the team's 11-10 victory at Dodger Stadium. The backstop's five singles and a three-run homer tie a National League record for hits in an extra-inning game.

2004 Saving the Yankees’ 7-5 victory over the Devil Rays in Tampa Bay, Mariano Rivera notches his 300th career save. The Panama City native becomes the first Yankee and 17th reliever in major league history to reach the milestone.

2005 In the eighth inning of the Red Sox 17-1 rout over the Yankees in New York, the largest margin of victory the team has ever enjoyed against their rivals, the stadium scoreboard goes blank for a few moments when the operator cannot keep up with the Boston barrage. The BoSox’s 27 hits, one shy of a Bronx Bomber record for hits allowed, is the most collected by the club since tying the team record of 28 in June of 2003, ironically in a game also started by Carl Pavano as the opposing pitcher, but in a Marlin uniform.

2005 With three remaining games left in May, the Padres surpass the previous club record for the most wins for any one month. The 5-3 win over the Giants marked the team’s 19th victory since May 1.

2006 At AT&T Park, Barry Bonds passes Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list taking sole possession of second place when he hits the 715th homer of his 21-year big league career. The historic homer, which comes off a 90-mph fastball thrown by Byung-Hyum Kim of the Rockies, makes the Giants outfielder the most prolific left-handed slugger in baseball history.

Tigers still in second

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

The Tigers starting rotation has been inconsistent for majority of their 43 games this season. However they're still hanging around second place in their division two games behind the Minnesota Twins. In the American League the Tigers rank 7th and 16th in the Major League.

When you compare the numbers between teams ahead of the Tigers their 4.12 ERA is something that can change. The team is 11th with hits against them with 365 where their division leader has 406.

The Tigers have blown only two save opportunities so that means when the bullpen has a job to do they're getting it done. The team is hitting decent, but their low RBI numbers gives other teams a chance to change the game with one or two good innings.

If the rotation can play solid baseball at least five to six innings a night they could really help themselves with staying confident. And with consistent pitching the offense can focus on hitting their way into first place.

1878 In a 3-1 National League loss to the White Stockings at Chicago's Lake Front Park, right-hander Jim McCormick of the Indianapolis Blues becomes the first player born in Scotland to appear in a major league game. Next season, as a 23-year old, the Glasgow native will managed the team, which will move to Cleveland, making him the youngest skipper in the history of the game.

1918 In what will become a precursor of a tragic event, Indian outfielder Tris Speaker is struck on the head by a pitch thrown by Red Sox hurler Carl Mays. The submarine pitcher, who will fatally bean Ray Chapman with a pitch in 1920 as a member of the Yankees, denies Speaker's allegation that the pitch was intentional.

1919 Red Sox southpaw Babe Ruth
hits the first of his 16 career grand slams. The bases-loaded home run proves to be the difference when Boston and the 'Bambino' beat the Browns at Sportsman's Park, 6-4.

1920 The Chicago police, dressed as soldiers and farmers, raid the Wrigley Field bleachers arresting two dozen Cub fans for gambling. All bets are off when Grover Cleveland Alexander blanks Philadephia, 6-0.

1925 Tris Speaker, scoring from first base on a single, plates the winning run in the Indians' 10-9 walk-off win over the Yankees. The Tribe score six times in the bottom of the ninth to accomplish the amazing comeback.

1940 Pinky Higgins hits three consecutive home runs at Detroit's Briggs Stadium. The slugging Tiger third baseman's offensive output helps the Tigers beat Boston, 10-7.

1948 In front of only 5,001 fans in Chicago, Joe DiMaggio strokes four extra-base hits for the fourth time in his career when he hits for the cycle for a second time in a 13-2 rout of the White Sox. The 'Yankee Clipper' paces the Bombers' 22-hit attack with a two home runs, a triple, a double and a single and drives in 6 runs.

1959 The Yankees become last-place club when they lose to Detroit, 13-6. It marks the first time in 19 years that the Bronx Bombers has occupied the basement of the American League.

1976 At Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox and Bronx Bombers are involved in one of the ugliest brawls in their fabled rivalry. The bench-clearing fight, instigated by a play at home plate in which BoSox backstop Carlton Fisk stabs Lou Piniella with the ball when the outfielder attempts to score, results in Bill Lee suffering a separated shoulder in a skirmish with Graig Nettles, causing the Boston southpaw to miss a significant portion of the season.

1978 In a 6-0 victory victory over Montreal, Willie Stargell hits the longest home run in the history of Olympic Stadium. The Pirates' first baseman 535-foot blast, hit off Expos' right-hander Wayne Twitchell, is his 407th round-tripper, tying him with Duke Snider for career homers.

1999 In a twin bill sweep of the Milwaukee, Mets' third baseman Robin Ventura becomes the first major league player to hit a grand slam in both ends of a doubleheader. As a member of the White Sox in 1995, the infielder also hit a pair of 'grand salamis' in game against against Texas.

2001 Barry Bonds becomes thirteenth player in major league history to hit home runs in four consecutive at-bats. The Giant outfielder went yard in his final two at-bats yesterday and homers in his first two official turns at the plate today.

2006 After barreling over fellow catcher Michael Barrett in a play he considered hard but clean, A.J. Pierzynski is surprised when the Cub backstop shows his displeasure by punching him the face. The incident ignites a bench-clearing brawl between the Windy City rivals that leads to a 15-minute delay and four ejections during the White Sox's 7-0 victory at U.S. Cellular Field.

2006 After a 29 at-bats homerless drought, Barry Bonds finally catches Babe Ruth with his 714th home run. The historic homer, which ties the designated hitter for second place for career round trippers, comes during the second inning of an interleague contest with the A's with the pitch thrown by southpaw Brad Halsey landing in the first deck of the right-center stands of McAfee Coliseum.

1875 In a match-up of undefeated teams, the visiting Boston Red Stockings (16-0) beat the Dark Blues (12-0) at the Hartford Ball Club Grounds, 10-5. The record crowd of 10,000 fans attend the National Association contest, including Mark Twain, who will later offer a five dollar reward for the return of his English-made brown silk umbrella pilfered at the game by a small boy when the famous writer stood up to cheer for the hometown team.

1912 As a replacement player, Allan Travers, a St. Joseph's College pitcher, takes the mound for the Tigers, who are fielding an amateur team to avoid a $5,000 fine due to the team's refusal to play the A's in support of a suspended teammate Ty Cobb. In what will be his only major league appearance, the collegiate hurler goes the distance giving up 24 runs, 14 earned runs, 26 hits, seven walks, but does strike out one as Philadelphia routs Detroit at Shibe Park,24-2.

1929 In the first game of a twin bill, the Dodgers rout the Phillies, 16-0. Johnny Frederick scores five times giving the Brooklyn center fielder a major league record of tallying eight runs in two games.

1929 At Baker Bowl, the Phillies split a doubleheader with Brooklyn, 16-20 and 8-6. The 50 runs scored is a major league record for tallies scored in a twin bill.

1931 Dodgers' outfielder Babe Herman hits for the cycle for the first of three times which will become a major league record.

1988 A's Dave Stewart breaks a major league record committing his twelfth balk of the season.

1990 Cubs' second baseman Ryan Sandberg's errorless game streak comes to an end after 123 games and 584 chances. Joe Morgan had held the previous record of 91 games.

1992 WQAM becomes the voice of the Marlins signing a four-year deal as the flagship radio station of the team. Listeners in Miami and southern Florida will be able to pick up the play-by-play action of the new National League expansion team at 560 am on their radio dial.

1998 Due to drastic payroll cuts reducing the World Champions effectiveness, two class-action lawsuits are filed against the Marlins - one for breach of contract and the other accusing the team of false advertising.

1998 With a 6-3 victory over the Orioles, the Devil Rays become only the second expansion team in major league history to sweep an away four-game series. The 1993 Colorado Rockies, who did it against the Dodgers, is the other team to accomplish this feat.

1999 Diamondbacks' outfielder Luis Gonzalez homers in his first at bat extending his hitting streak to 30 games, tying three other players for the longest streak in the decade.

1999 After missing the teams' first 36 games, Joe Torre returns to the Yankee dugout, two months after undergoing successful surgery for prostate cancer. Prior to the 6-3 loss to the Red Sox, the 58-year old skipper receives a two-minute standing ovation from the Fenway Park crowd when the scoreboard welcomes him back.

2000 In a 6-2 loss to the Padres, the Marlins steal 10 bases which is one shy of the National League record. Luis Castillo (3), Cliff Floyd (3), Preston Wilson (2), and Mark Kotsay (2), the top four batters in the Fish lineup, are responsible for the grand theft.

2000 Mark McGwire passes Mickey Mantle into eighth place on the all-time home run career list with 539. 'Big Mac' goes deep three times as the Cardinals beat the Phillies, 7-2.

2004 At the age of 40, southpaw Randy Johnson becomes the oldest pitcher to ever throw a perfect game as the Diamondbacks beat the Braves, 2-0. The ‘Big Unit’ joins Cy Young, Jim Bunning, Hideo Nomo and Nolan Ryan as the only hurlers to throw no-hitters in both leagues and creates the longest time span between no-no’s having first accomplishing the feat against the Tigers in June of 1990.

2008 It takes a pitchout and a perfect throw by Brewers catcher Jason Kendall, but Jacoby Ellsbury is finally caught stealing after swiping 25 consecutive stolen bases to start his big league career. The Red Sox outfielder is second all time to Tim Raines who recorded 27 straight thefts with the Expos before being caught in 1981.

2008 With his seventh stolen base in the last two games, Marlins' second baseman Luis Castillo is one theft shy of tying a National League mark. The record of 8 pilfered bags in consecutive games was set by Walt Wilmont of the Chicago Colts (Cubs) in 1894.

2009 Jason Kendall collects his 2000th career hit when singles in the Brewers 8-4 victory over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The 34-year old backstop becomes the 254th player, but only the eighth to be primarily a catcher to reach that milestone.

Tigers put away Sox

By Justin Cousineau

What started out with a loss to the weekend against good hitting ball club Boston Red Sox the Tigers found a way to come out on top.

Friday night Max Scherzer posted a 7.29 ERA, but the team was only getting offense from a couple players scattered through the line-up. Brandon Inge, Brennan Boesch and Magglio Ordonez did their part for the team but still fell short losing 7-2.

Although Dontrelle Willis never found his groove on Saturday night but the Tigers came back in the 12th to tie the series and give their team motivation going into Sunday. Galarraga had a strong start and with the team getting nine hits and scoring five runs it was enough to hold the Red Sox to just one run and improve their season record to 22-16.

Tigers Take on the World Champions

By Justin Cousineau

In a week of rough weather which some would say belongs in April the Tigers and Yankees played a four game series at Comerica Park.

Monday night the Tigers honoured Hall of Famer Ernie Harwell and did with a 5-4 victory over the World Champions. A flag waves in the outfield along with the American flag to honour Harwell and all he's done for the Tigers organization and its fans.

The double header Wednesday had a quick game with only a 2-0 score for the Tigers as Rick Procello got his game on track. The Tigers won the series after being swept by the Twins and splitting with the Indians.

Although the second game was a difficult loss Detroit came right back Thursday afternoon to show their fans and the Yankees that game wouldn't break their focus winning the final game of the series 6-0.

This was a must win series for the Tigers and they came through and showed there a team who is not easy to put away and one who can win games from both sides of the ball.

Tigers split with Indians

By Justin Cousineau
In Play on Facebook

Friday nights game against the Cleveland Indians was postponed but the Tigers made noise on Saturday. Scott Sizemore opened things up against in the fourth to end a scoreless tie and give Justin Verlander more room to work with.

Verlander looked more like himself striking out nine batters and in just six innings and the bullpen helped him secure that win. Joel Zumaya pitched two strong innings making the game an easy close. With five strikeouts the Tigers pitching staff did their job well and gave the lineup the opportunity to focus on hitting and having fun.

With Sizemore's bases clearing double and Cabrera regaining the lead in the seventh with a two run single gave the Tigers an edge over the Indians.

Sunday afternoon wasn't as successful losing to 7-4, where the Indians ended a 10-game losing streak to the Tigers. Andy Marte hit a two-run triple off the left center field wall as Johnny Damon judged the ball poorly off the wall and Austin Jackson pinching in to close for back-up.

Jackson went to turn back to play the ball of the wall but lost his footing and before regaining his composure two runs were in and Marte had a stand-up triple.

Still in second place in the division the Tigers have a lot of things going right for them as they set to honor Ernie Harwell on Monday's game against World Champions New York Yankees.

LOOONG GONE! Goodbye Ernie, from your friend Denny McLain.

By Denny McLain
In Play on Facebook

"LOOONG GONE"!! Can’t you hear Ernie hollering his famous "LOOONG GONE" as the good Lord took him to heaven?

Can’t you see him looking back and smiling and then hollering as he was heading to the Lord, "LOOONG GONE"?

I can and knowing Ernie the way I knew the grand gentleman I am sure he uttered that famous phrase as he left us all behind.

I can also see him going through the "Heavenly Gates" of our Lord and seeing a couple of fans who got there ahead of Ernie and saying to the fans, aren't you the O’Malley’s from Traverse City? Remember when you caught that foul ball?

Yep, I have one fond memory after another of Ernie.

Sharon and I visited with Ernie a couple months ago and while he put on a brave front, I could tell he was suffering and doing all that he could to be kind to us as we sat around and chatted about the “GOOD OLD TIMES”, he still had that sharp memory and recall, and I could tell he was also prepared to meet his Lord and God.

See that is the way Ernie always was at anytime, he was always ready for the next inning.

I also share lots of good music times with Ernie, as some of you know he wrote the song “Denny McLain, Denny McLain, there never has been any like Denny McLain”.

I would play the piano and organ when we were on the road when I was playing. We would from time to time spend afternoons writing and playing music trying to come up with the “Big Hit”, but we never did, but we sure had lots of great hours and times playing and joking especially with the lyrics of songs.

I would use some profanity to fill in a lyric and Ernie would give me a deep sigh and smile, but never would he use the same kind of language, God we laughed and laughed, he had a great deep laugh and enjoyed great humor. His favorite though as most of us know was the great and kooky Norm Cash, he too tried to make music with Ernie.

But I think the one event that remains the best definition of who Ernie really was is when Tigers owner Mike Illitch made the worst PR move in professional sports by firing Ernie.

The fans erupted over this but Ernie just kept going, maintaining his class and character, doing ESPN. Mike never has figured out the maintaining one’s class and dignity is worth more than a billion dollars. And after the “Pizza King” was beaten up by everyone in town…uh oh, Ernie came back one more time.

We will miss Ernie, but you are in a much better place now, with God and at peace from all of the misery and suffering this past year.

He is still pulling for our Tigers and still yelling after every homerun, “LOOONG GONE”.

Yes he will be missed but he will never be gone!

He is, Ernie Harwell, the first radio broadcaster in the Hall of Fame and in plain old fashioned talk, just one hell of a man and a gentleman, he never compromised his integrity, that is really saying something in these days and times.

God Bless and take care of our Ernie Harwell…

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Lulu and the Harwell family.”
