Although the Tigers drove in 10 runs and recorded 15 hits Max Scherzer's dominance on the mound caught the eye of most viewers.
Scherzer posted 14 strikeouts and in just 5 2/3 innings and shutting out the Oakland A's. He commanded the game before handing it off to the bullpen, and they kept things rolling only allowing two runs the rest of the way.
Not to take anything away from Scherzer's big win, but if he were to play this way on a more consistent basis he would be in the rotation all year long. He has allowed 8 or more hits and three of those five were losses the other two a no decision.
Showcasing major league fastballs and change-ups like he did tonight could really give a nudge to the decision as to how often or long will he play in the Major Leagues. Games like tonight help his confidence and if he can roll that motivation into his next possible start he can build on his stats and help his team to try and move up into 1st place.

On Sunday, the Tigers will recall the contract of righthanded pitcher Max Scherzer from Triple A Toledo. Scherzer is scheduled to start against Oakland on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.
To create room on the club's 25-man roster, the Tigers will designate the contract of lefthanded pitcher Dontrelle Willis for assignment on Sunday.

Dontrelle Willis has nearly the same amount of walks (25) as Justin Verlander (23). But the biggest factor is Willis has pitched almost half the innings as Verlander.
Willis has been very unproductive since putting on a Tigers uniform and still we sit and wait for him to pitch like he did in Florida. Will we ever see that from him again?
There's a possibility we won't.
with a 1-2 record in eight games this season he's pitched 38 innings, allowed 21 runs, 25 base-on-balls, and only 28 strikeouts. Theses numbers are nearly neck-and-neck with Verlander who's pitched 65 innings.
Starting against the Oakland A's tonight we will see if Willis can gain control of his pitches early and stay consistent for at least 5 innings. The Tigers bullpen has been one of the best, but everyone needs to play their role and let's hope Willis can do just that.

GUILLEN REINSTATED FROM 15-DAY DL, WORTH OPTIONED TO TOLEDO

The Tigers today recalled Carlos Guillen from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Triple A Toledo and reinstated him from the 15-day disabled list. To create room on the club’s 25-man roster, the Tigers today optioned the contract of infielder Danny Worth to Toledo.
Guillen saw action in five games with Toledo during an injury rehabilitation assignment, hitting .333 (6x18) with five runs scored, three doubles, a home run, two RBI and two walks.
Guillen had been sidelined since April 23 with a left hamstring strain.

Tigers still in second

The Tigers starting rotation has been inconsistent for majority of their 43 games this season. However they're still hanging around second place in their division two games behind the Minnesota Twins. In the American League the Tigers rank 7th and 16th in the Major League.
When you compare the numbers between teams ahead of the Tigers their 4.12 ERA is something that can change. The team is 11th with hits against them with 365 where their division leader has 406.
The Tigers have blown only two save opportunities so that means when the bullpen has a job to do they're getting it done. The team is hitting decent, but their low RBI numbers gives other teams a chance to change the game with one or two good innings.
If the rotation can play solid baseball at least five to six innings a night they could really help themselves with staying confident. And with consistent pitching the offense can focus on hitting their way into first place.

Next season, as a 23-year old, the Glasgow native will managed the team, which will move to Cleveland, making him the youngest skipper in the history of the game.
1918 In what will become a precursor of a tragic event, Indian outfielder Tris Speaker is struck on the head by a pitch thrown by Red Sox hurler Carl Mays. The submarine pitcher, who will fatally bean Ray Chapman with a pitch in 1920 as a member of the Yankees, denies Speaker's allegation that the pitch was intentional.
1919 Red Sox southpaw Babe Ruth hits the first of his 16 career grand slams. The bases-loaded home run proves to be the difference when Boston and the 'Bambino' beat the Browns at Sportsman's Park, 6-4.
1920 The Chicago police, dressed as soldiers and farmers, raid the Wrigley Field bleachers arresting two dozen Cub fans for gambling. All bets are off when Grover Cleveland Alexander blanks Philadephia, 6-0.

The record crowd of 10,000 fans attend the National Association contest, including Mark Twain, who will later offer a five dollar reward for the return of his English-made brown silk umbrella pilfered at the game by a small boy when the famous writer stood up to cheer for the hometown team.
1912 As a replacement player, Allan Travers, a St. Joseph's College pitcher, takes the mound for the Tigers, who are fielding an amateur team to avoid a $5,000 fine due to the team's refusal to play the A's in support of a suspended teammate Ty Cobb. In what will be his only major league appearance, the collegiate hurler goes the distance giving up 24 runs, 14 earned runs, 26 hits, seven walks, but does strike out one as Philadelphia routs Detroit at Shibe Park,24-2.

Tigers put away Sox

What started out with a loss to the weekend against good hitting ball club Boston Red Sox the Tigers found a way to come out on top.
Friday night Max Scherzer posted a 7.29 ERA, but the team was only getting offense from a couple players scattered through the line-up. Brandon Inge, Brennan Boesch and Magglio Ordonez did their part for the team but still fell short losing 7-2.
Although Dontrelle Willis never found his groove on Saturday night but the Tigers came back in the 12th to tie the series and give their team motivation going into Sunday. Galarraga had a strong start and with the team getting nine hits and scoring five runs it was enough to hold the Red Sox to just one run and improve their season record to 22-16.

Tigers move P Scherzer and 2B Sizemore to Triple A Toledo

The Tigers optioned the contract of righthanded pitcher Max Scherzer and second baseman Scott Sizemore to Triple A Toledo following tonight's game.
The Tigers will recall the contract of righthanded pitcher Armando Galarraga from Toledo on Sunday. Additionally, the club will purchase the contract of infielder Danny Worth from Toledo on Sunday. Worth will wear uniform number 29.

Tigers Take on the World Champions

In a week of rough weather which some would say belongs in April the Tigers and Yankees played a four game series at Comerica Park.
Monday night the Tigers honoured Hall of Famer Ernie Harwell and did with a 5-4 victory over the World Champions. A flag waves in the outfield along with the American flag to honour Harwell and all he's done for the Tigers organization and its fans.
The double header Wednesday had a quick game with only a 2-0 score for the Tigers as Rick Procello got his game on track. The Tigers won the series after being swept by the Twins and splitting with the Indians.
Although the second game was a difficult loss Detroit came right back Thursday afternoon to show their fans and the Yankees that game wouldn't break their focus winning the final game of the series 6-0.
This was a must win series for the Tigers and they came through and showed there a team who is not easy to put away and one who can win games from both sides of the ball.

Tigers split with Indians

Friday nights game against the Cleveland Indians was postponed but the Tigers made noise on Saturday. Scott Sizemore opened things up against in the fourth to end a scoreless tie and give Justin Verlander more room to work with.
Verlander looked more like himself striking out nine batters and in just six innings and the bullpen helped him secure that win. Joel Zumaya pitched two strong innings making the game an easy close. With five strikeouts the Tigers pitching staff did their job well and gave the lineup the opportunity to focus on hitting and having fun.
With Sizemore's bases clearing double and Cabrera regaining the lead in the seventh with a two run single gave the Tigers an edge over the Indians.
Sunday afternoon wasn't as successful losing to 7-4, where the Indians ended a 10-game losing streak to the Tigers. Andy Marte hit a two-run triple off the left center field wall as Johnny Damon judged the ball poorly off the wall and Austin Jackson pinching in to close for back-up.
Jackson went to turn back to play the ball of the wall but lost his footing and before regaining his composure two runs were in and Marte had a stand-up triple.
Still in second place in the division the Tigers have a lot of things going right for them as they set to honor Ernie Harwell on Monday's game against World Champions New York Yankees.

LOOONG GONE! Goodbye Ernie, from your friend Denny McLain.

"LOOONG GONE"!! Can’t you hear Ernie hollering his famous "LOOONG GONE" as the good Lord took him to heaven?
Can’t you see him looking back and smiling and then hollering as he was heading to the Lord, "LOOONG GONE"?
I can and knowing Ernie the way I knew the grand gentleman I am sure he uttered that famous phrase as he left us all behind.
I can also see him going through the "Heavenly Gates" of our Lord and seeing a couple of fans who got there ahead of Ernie and saying to the fans, aren't you the O’Malley’s from Traverse City? Remember when you caught that foul ball?
Yep, I have one fond memory after another of Ernie.
Sharon and I visited with Ernie a couple months ago and while he put on a brave front, I could tell he was suffering and doing all that he could to be kind to us as we sat around and chatted about the “GOOD OLD TIMES”, he still had that sharp memory and recall, and I could tell he was also prepared to meet his Lord and God.
See that is the way Ernie always was at anytime, he was always ready for the next inning.
I also share lots of good music times with Ernie, as some of you know he wrote the song “Denny McLain, Denny McLain, there never has been any like Denny McLain”.
I would play the piano and organ when we were on the road when I was playing. We would from time to time spend afternoons writing and playing music trying to come up with the “Big Hit”, but we never did, but we sure had lots of great hours and times playing and joking especially with the lyrics of songs.
I would use some profanity to fill in a lyric and Ernie would give me a deep sigh and smile, but never would he use the same kind of language, God we laughed and laughed, he had a great deep laugh and enjoyed great humor. His favorite though as most of us know was the great and kooky Norm Cash, he too tried to make music with Ernie.
But I think the one event that remains the best definition of who Ernie really was is when Tigers owner Mike Illitch made the worst PR move in professional sports by firing Ernie.
The fans erupted over this but Ernie just kept going, maintaining his class and character, doing ESPN. Mike never has figured out the maintaining one’s class and dignity is worth more than a billion dollars. And after the “Pizza King” was beaten up by everyone in town…uh oh, Ernie came back one more time.
We will miss Ernie, but you are in a much better place now, with God and at peace from all of the misery and suffering this past year.
He is still pulling for our Tigers and still yelling after every homerun, “LOOONG GONE”.
Yes he will be missed but he will never be gone!
He is, Ernie Harwell, the first radio broadcaster in the Hall of Fame and in plain old fashioned talk, just one hell of a man and a gentleman, he never compromised his integrity, that is really saying something in these days and times.

His favorite though as most of us know was the great and kooky Norm Cash, he too tried to make music with Ernie.
But I think the one event that remains the best definition of who Ernie really was is when Tigers owner Mike Illitch made the worst PR move in professional sports by firing Ernie.
The fans erupted over this but Ernie just kept going, maintaining his class and character, doing ESPN. Mike never has figured out the maintaining one’s class and dignity is worth more than a billion dollars. And after the “Pizza King” was beaten up by everyone in town…uh oh, Ernie came back one more time.
We will miss Ernie, but you are in a much better place now, with God and at peace from all of the misery and suffering this past year.
He is still pulling for our Tigers and still yelling after every homerun, “LOOONG GONE”.
Yes he will be missed but he will never be gone!
He is, Ernie Harwell, the first radio broadcaster in the Hall of Fame and in plain old fashioned talk, just one hell of a man and a gentleman, he never compromised his integrity, that is really saying something in these days and times.

"Ernie Harwell was the most popular sports figure in the State of Michigan. He was so genuine in everything that he did – from his legendary broadcasting to the way he treated the fans and everyone around him. He was truly a gentleman in every sense of the word. Ernie has a special place in the hearts of all Detroit Tigers' fans and the memories he created for so many of us will never be forgotten. Baseball lost a legendary voice this evening and we have all lost a dear friend. Marian and I, and our entire organization, extend our deepest sympathies to Ernie's wife, Lulu, and to the Harwell family."

TIGERS TO REMEMBER ERNIE HARWELL WITH PREGAME TRIBUTE MONDAY
PLAYERS & COACHES TO WEAR PATCH ON UNIFORM IN MEMORY OF HARWELL
The Detroit Tigers will pay tribute to Hall of Fame broadcaster Ernie Harwell prior to the Tigers 7:05 p.m. game on Monday, May 10 versus the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.
A flag bearing Mr. Harwell’s initials will be raised on the center field flag pole and will be flown through the end of the current season. Additionally, for the remainder of the season, all uniformed personnel will wear a patch on the right sleeve in memory of Mr. Harwell, inscribed with the legendary broadcaster’s initials.
