MAX SCHERZER NAMED “KING TIGER” BY MAYO SMITH SOCIETY

Max Scherzer was named the recipient of the 2013 “King Tiger” award, given annually by the Mayo Smith Society. It is the first “King Tiger” award of Max Scherzer’s career. The award takes into account each player’s on-field accomplishments and off-field endeavors. Members of the Mayo Smith Society complete their voting over a month-long period during the offseason.

Scherzer, 29, led the American League with 21 wins and an .875 winning percentage, while he was second with 240 strikeouts, 10.08 strikeouts per nine innings, 25 quality starts, and a .198 batting average against, fifth with a 2.90 ERA, and tied for fifth with 214.1 innings pitched.

Scherzer established a franchise record, winning 13 straight decisions to begin the season as a starter. In addition, he became just the second pitcher in American League history to fan six-or-more batters in his first 18 outings to begin the season, joining Pedro Martinez who struck out six-or-more batters in 29 straight outings to begin the season in 2000. (Source: Elias Sports Bureau)

Off the field, Scherzer and wife Erica May created a program called “Scherzer’s Superstars”, which brings eight young people and their matches from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Detroit to Comerica Park to watch batting practice, receive complimentary Scherzer's Superstars t-shirts and have the opportunity to meet Max before enjoying a Tigers game. Through the program, Scherzer hopes to instill excitement in the game of baseball with the children, and thank the mentors for volunteering their time to serve as a positive role model for the Detroit community.

He is also actively involved with Dreams Come True, Play Baseball Detroit, Autographed Memorabilia Donation Programs, Gloves for Kids and the Tigers Winter Caravan. Additionally, Scherzer is an advocate and spokesman for Pennies for Paws, a coin collection campaign to support the Wildlife Without Borders Tiger Conservation Fund of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Mayo Smith Society, founded in 1983 and named for the manager of the Tigers 1968 World Series championship club, is a nationwide organization of Tigers fans. Since 2004, the society has voted on King Tiger winners based on players’ on-field and off-field endeavors, picking up a tradition from 1964-80 when the presidents of individual Tigers fan clubs had voted for their own King Tiger awardees. Mayo Smith Society representatives plan to make the King Tiger presentation to Scherzer during the organization’s annual trip to Lakeland, Florida, for Spring Training.

WHO WAS BETTER TEAM...THE '68 TIGERS OR THE '84 TIGERS?

“TIGERS DEBATE OF ALL DEBATES”
December 4, 2013
MGM Grand Casino
“Intrigue Room”

Which World Championship Tiger team, the '68 Tigers managed by Mayo Smith, or the '84 Tigers under Sparky, was the better team? It's a question that's been debated for almost 30 years.

The only way to answer that question is to get the players together from both those teams. That's exactly what's being planned in Detroit. Here are the details:
WHAT: THE TIGERS SHOWDOWN IN MOTOWN!
A great evening of dining, storytelling, memorabilia, autographs, raffles, and auction items, with stars of two Tigers World Series Championship teams.

WHO: It's the '68 Tigers, led by HOFER Al Kaline, 31 game winner Denny McLain, Slugger Willie Horton, and (just added) Super Sub Tom Matchick, and Reliever Jon Warden VS. the '84 Tigers, led by Sluggers Darrell Evans and Lance Parrish, and Starting Pitchers Dan Petry and Dave Rozema. Other names may be added in the future. It's an All-Star cast unlike anything you've seen in years! Author Eli Zaret will MC the debate and the storytelling (and maybe a few lies). You'll hear wild tales you never heard before!

When: This never-to-be-forgotten event will be held on Wednesday, December 4. The "Meet and Greet" with Cash Bar will begin at 6PM, followed by dinner, an incredible auction, the great debate and storytelling, and the end of the auction.
Where: MGM Grand Hotel, located at 1777 Third St. in Detroit, a couple of Cabrera home runs east of old Tiger Stadium where these teams made history.

Why: To honor our heroes and to relive those great moments from the past. All profits support our injured military heroes and their families, as well as the USA Military All-Star Baseball Team.

Cost: Individual Tickets Cost $150 per person, and include one autograph per Tiger, subject to availability. Depending on demand, additional autographs may be available for a donation; all autograph proceeds are for our military heroes. Cost also includes a delicious buffet dinner at the MGM. Cabrera Wins Second Consecutive American League Hank Aaron Award

Award Recognizes Most Outstanding Offensive Performer in Each League Major League Baseball announced today that Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Paul Goldschmidt of the Arizona Diamondbacks have been selected as the winners of the 2013 Hank Aaron Award. This is Cabrera’s second consecutive season winning the Hank Aaron Award for the American League. Established in 1999 to honor the 25th Anniversary of Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record, the Hank Aaron Award is officially sanctioned by Major League Baseball and recognizes the most outstanding offensive performer in each League. Fans voted for the award on MLB.com, and for the fourth straight year, a special panel of Hall of Fame players led by Hank Aaron joined fans in voting for the award. The Hall of Fame panel led by Aaron includes some of the greatest offensive players of all-time – Roberto Alomar, Johnny Bench, Tony Gwynn, Paul Molitor, Eddie Murray and Robin Yount. These Hall of Famers – who combined for 17,629 hits, 8,278 RBI and 1,723 home runs – were personally selected by Hank Aaron to lend their expertise to help select the best offensive performer in each League. "I want to extend my congratulations to Miguel Cabrera and Paul Goldschmidt on being selected as the winners of the 2013 Hank Aaron Award, an award named after one of the greatest players in the history of baseball," Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said. "Miguel completed another stellar season this year, including winning his third batting title. Paul was an offensive force on the Diamondbacks and in the National League.” “It is a privilege to have the award that recognizes the most outstanding offensive performer in each League named after me,” said Hank Aaron. “I want to congratulate Miguel and Paul on their outstanding seasons and extend my thanks to the Hall of Famers and fans who selected the winners.” Cabrera followed up his Triple Crown-winning season of 2012 with his third consecutive American League batting title after hitting .348 in 2013. The eight-time All-Star, who was the starting third baseman for the A.L. at the Midsummer Classic, became the first Tigers player to lead the A.L. in hitting in three consecutive seasons since Hall of Famer Ty Cobb accomplished the feat (1917-19). The 30-year-old slugger matched his career best with 44 home runs (also 2012) and collected 137 RBI, marking his sixth straight season of 100-or-more RBI for Detroit and joining Harry Heilmann (1923-29) as the only players in franchise history to do so. The Venezuela native led the A.L. with a .442 on-base percentage, a .636 slugging percentage and a .397 average with runners in scoring position while tying for first with 37 go-ahead RBI. He also ranked among league leaders in homers (2nd), RBI (2nd), total bases (2nd, 353), runs scored (T-2nd, 103), hits (T-2nd, 193), walks (3rd, 90) and multi-hit games (9th, 52). The 2012 A.L. MVP has eclipsed the 100-RBI mark in each of his full Major League seasons and he has hit at least .320 in eight of his last 10 seasons. Goldschmidt, who was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2013, hit .302 with 36 doubles, 36 home runs, 125 RBI, 99 walks and 103 runs scored in his second full season with the Diamondbacks. The 26-year-old led the National League in slugging percentage (.551), extra-base hits (75), RBI and total bases (332), and tied for first in homers. He also ranked third in walks, tied for third in runs scored, fourth with a .401 on-base percentage and tied for 10th in doubles. Among all Major Leaguers, the right-handed-hitting slugger tied for first in go-ahead RBI (37), go-ahead home runs (20), walk-off homers (3), and home runs after the eighth inning (7), while tying for most game-winning RBI (19) and RBI with runners in scoring position (84). The Texas State University product joined Hall of Famers Mel Ott (1929 and 1932) and Eddie Mathews as the only three N.L. players to post a .300 average, 35 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 runs scored and 99 walks during their 25-year-old season or earlier (ages as of June 30 of that season). In addition, Paul is the 19th player since 1977 to lead the N.L. or tie for the lead in home runs and RBI in a single season. Goldschmidt, who was drafted by the D-backs in the eighth round of the 2009 Draft, became the ninth player in the last 37 years to lead the N.L. or tie for the lead in homers and RBI while hitting at least .300, joining Matt Kemp (2011), Albert Pujols (2010), Ryan Howard (2006), Andres Galarraga (1996), Dante Bichette (1995), Barry Bonds (1993), Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt (1981) and George Foster (1977). Past winners of the award include: Miguel Cabrera and Buster Posey (2012), Jose Bautista and Matt Kemp (2011), Bautista and Joey Votto (2010); Derek Jeter and Albert Pujols (2009); Aramis Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis (2008); Alex Rodriguez and Prince Fielder (2007); Jeter and Ryan Howard (2006); David Ortiz and Andruw Jones (2005); Manny Ramirez and Barry Bonds (2004); Rodriguez and Pujols (2003); Rodriguez and Bonds (2001-02); Carlos Delgado and Todd Helton 2000) and Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa (1999).

The Tigers have now surpassed three million tickets sold in back-to-back seasons, and have exceeded three million tickets sold in four of the last seven years. The Tigers previously reached the three-million plateau in 2012 when they sold 3,028,033 tickets. The club established a franchise record with 3,202,645 tickets sold in 2008, and reached the three-million mark for the first time in 2007 when the club sold 3,047,139 tickets. The Tigers have sold out 33 games this season. The 33 sellouts are the second-most sellouts in club history, trailing only the 2008 season when the club sold out 41 games. The Tigers average attendance of 38,021 ranks sixth in Major League Baseball, third in the American League and first in the American League Central Division. Since 2006, the Tigers have sold nearly 23 million tickets and have averaged nearly 2.8 million fans per season. “The entire Tigers organization would like to thank the fans for coming out to Comerica Park and supporting our team,” said Tigers Executive Vice President of Business Operations, Duane McLean. “Reaching three million tickets sold is a testament to not only the great product on the field, but also to the loyalty and support of the Tigers fans. They truly are the best in baseball.” To say thank you to Tigers fans for their incredible support throughout the season, Carlos Robles was randomly selected to represent all Tigers fans as the “Three Millionth Fan”, and received four 27-game season tickets for 2014, upgraded tickets for the game, a commemorative three millionth fan ticket, and a gift basket full of Tigers items, including a $500 gift card to the D Shop, movie passes to the Palladium and an overnight stay at Motor City Casino Hotel.

Thank God Opening Day Has Arrived! by Denny McLain

Money---Money---Money---Honey

This is the time of year that everybody starts out even: everybody is hitting 000, a possible 300 year and every pitcher on the team is going to win 20, if they catch a couple of breaks, well that's why we call it spring training, we dream and hope, that's the reason they come down now in shape, they try to get 1 upmanship on the hitters because hitters don't spend as much time in the batting cage as pitchers do working on their skills during the winter and especially the six weeks prior to spring training.

One great benefit that we have is that we are a "lock" to win our division; there are no significant teams in our division. KC, Minnesota, Chicago and Cleveland.

Is there one of those teams that could be 500 this year, of course not.....so all we do to do is coast, get ready for playoffs now, we actually could be getting ready already for the playoffs. I'm not kidding, that is how brutal our division is at this moment.

Don Kelly
Our announcers were talking about the great change in Don Kelly, he will probably never be a starter in the major leagues, he's going to have to work like hell to get the number of years required to be a member of the pension that's just because Don Kelly is now hitting with a shorter version of his long swing huh?

Don Kelly has never received this much airtime in his entire career, guys pick it up on the broadcasts, do some Jimmy Northrup, tell the stories, get excited, and explain the situations, Don Kelly is a great guy, but his career so far is a hair more exciting than warm milk.

Does that mean that Don Kelly is going to hit .350 or .340 or .330…NOT!! Don Kelly is reliable defensively, there are others on teams that are reliable defensively, I suggest to you what we will wind up needing is runs. What wins ball games is also good defense, in a lot of games the ability to hit and run, the ability to bunt at the appropriate times, those things make up a ball game today.

Justin Verlander
$180 million dollars. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can anyone be worth this kind of money? Can anyone contribute enough as a pitcher to be worth $180 million?

Folks he's worth every penny cause someone has agreed to pay the money and now has set a new bar in the game for money. NOW he's gotta do the job.

As long as Cabrera, Fielder and Hunter stay healthy, we should walk into the playoffs. But if Cabrera ever gets hurt for a lengthy period of time, all bets are off. I have never seen one player so valuable to a team or any team. He makes everyone in front of him in the lineup much better hitters; no one wants to pitch to Cabrera with men on base. And the guys behind him get better pitches cause he walks so much and you have to pitch to them if Cabrera is walking and is on base.

Now if anyone was watching the World Series you saw what I've been saying for years, great hitters must be pitched inside, do not allow great hitters to extend their arms, when he extends, he is a weapon, the Giants told the world how to pitch Cabrera but on the pitching staff of Cleveland, Minnesota, KC and Chicago who can actually keep their fastballs in on the hands of Cabrera? Who on those teams have enough serious velocity to get it inside hard?

Salaries
NFL
Tony Romo - Dallas: $100 million.....Are you kidding? One playoff win---ONE THAT’S IT!

Erin Rogers – Green Bay:$125-$150 million with about 75M guaranteed, what is going on and they play 16 games!

Time Magazine Reports Team Salaries

New York Yankees $228,995,945

Los Angeles Dodgers $216,302,909

Philadelphia $159,578,214

Boston $158,967,286

Detroit $149,046,844

And the owners of the major league teams are talking about either reducing pensions for staff (not players) or getting rid of them all together. What? Look at these five highest payrolls!

Takeaways

MLB Average Salary: $3,450,000.00 Million Dollars.

A-Rod will this year make (29,000,000.00): more than the entire Astros Payroll of (24.000,000.00)

Johan-Santana will make $24,300,000 million this year on disabled list.

Dodgers will likely pass the Yankees for the top spot next year.

Miami cut its payroll from last season by more than 60 percent.

Miami payroll $39,500,00.00

The Blue Jays will field $37 million worth of Marlins.

Arizona's highest-paid player is a setup guy.

Jack Morris made only $25,500,000.00 Million dollars in his entire career?

Verlander this year $22,000,000.00. Million

Denny McLain Entire Career, $445,000.00 dollars.

Among the NL favorites, the Braves, Nationals, and Reds all show the importance of home-grown pitching. Giants have reached the phase where they've had to pay top-dollar to keep their aces.

Houston' Manager said this: "When we get on the baseball field with whomever the opponent is, they are not sitting there saying: `Well, their players make more money than us so therefore you're deemed a winner and we're deemed a loser.'"

This is true. It's also true that Houston could lose 110 games this year. But Houston sucks big time!

Now let’s see if the Tigers, if not positively clinch the division, at least figuratively clinch the division before August 15.

Thank God Opening Day has arrived!

TIGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH JUSTIN VERLANDER ON FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION

Five-Time All-Star’s deal through the 2019 season with a vesting option for 2020

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms with righthanded pitcher Justin Verlander on a five-year contract extension through the 2019 season with a vesting option for the 2020 season.

Verlander, 30, compiled a 17-8 record, 2.64 ERA (238.1IP/70ER) and 239 strikeouts in 33 starts with the Tigers during the 2012 season. He topped the American League with six complete games, 238.1 innings pitched and 239 strikeouts, while he finished second with a 2.64 ERA, .217 batting average against, 7.25 hits per nine innings and 3.98 strikeouts per walk, tied for third with 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings and tied for fourth with 17 wins.

“Justin is one of the premier pitchers in baseball and we are thrilled to keep him in a Tigers uniform for many years to come,” Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. “Justin has been a Tiger for his entire career and he is on pace to be one of the greatest pitchers in this illustrious franchise’s history.”

A five-time American League all-star selection (2007, 2009-12), Verlander has posted a 124-65 record, 3.40 ERA (1,553.2IP/587ER) and 1,454 strikeouts in 232 starts during his major league career. Detroit’s first-round selection in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in 2004, he is currently fifth all-time in club history with 1,454 strikeouts and 10th with 124 wins.

Verlander was selected the American League Most Valuable Player and unanimously selected the American League Cy Young Award winner in 2011. He became the 10th pitcher in major league history to win both the Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Awards during the same season, joining Don Newcombe (1956), Sandy Koufax (1963), Bob Gibson (1968), Denny McLain (1968), Vida Blue (1971), Rollie Fingers (1981), Guillermo Hernandez (1984), Roger Clemens (1986) and Dennis Eckersley (1992).

He was selected the American League Rookie of the Year with the Tigers in 2006. Verlander joined Don Newcombe to become only the second player in history to win the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year Awards. Newcombe was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1949 and he earned both the National League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Awards in 1956.

Verlander led all American League Pitchers with 24 wins, a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts during the 2011 season to become just the second Tigers pitcher to ever lead all three categories during a single season. He joined Hal Newhouser (1945) in accomplishing the feat.

He has led the American League in strikeouts in each of the last two seasons, fanning 250 batters in 2011 and 239 batters during the 2012 season. Verlander is the first Tigers pitcher to lead the league in strikeouts in back-to-back seasons since Jim Bunning did so in 1959 and 1960.

Verlander fired the first no-hitter in Comerica Park history on June 12, 2007 versus Milwaukee, marking the sixth no-hitter in Tigers history. He tossed the second no-hitter of his career on May 7, 2011 at Toronto, the seventh no-hitter in Tigers history. Verlander joined Virgil Trucks as the only two pitchers in Tigers history with multiple no-hitters. Trucks threw two no-hitters for the Tigers during the 1952 season. According to STATS LLC, Verlander became the 27th pitcher to record two career no-hitters in the American or National League.

He is scheduled to start on Opening Day in Minnesota on Monday afternoon, marking the sixth straight season (2008-13) Verlander has been tabbed the club’s Opening Day starter by Jim Leyland. It marks the longest such streak by a Tigers pitcher since Jack Morris started 11 straight Opening Days (1980-90).

For each of his home starts, Verlander hosts Veterans from the John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Detroit and the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System. The Veterans, along with their families, watch the game from Verlander’s personal luxury suite. Veterans receive a personalized welcome letter from Verlander, while all guests receive a Verlander’s Victory to Veterans T-shirt and are welcomed on the scoreboard during the game.
